WormsInstructions for Worms

In this program you have to guide a poor little worm around the screen to allow the worm to feed on each of the displayed apples. Your task is to eat all the apples as quickly and with as few moves as possible. However - while the worm is eating an apple he doesn't like being made to move off too quickly. He likes to give his food a few moments to digest. While his food is settling he changes his colour from a subtle brown to a striking black and white flash. Please do not try to move him until he returns to his normal colour.

Before you start the exercise you may want to change a few of the options from the default settings. This can be done by pressing the middle or *MENU* button of the mouse over the main window. The main menu will appear and you can change the input device, the difficulty level, the time required for digestion and the sound volume level.

There are three choices potentially available for input. These are mouse, keyboard or 'concept keyboard' (if an appropriate I/O podule is present).

There are three specific levels of difficulty:
*Easy*, *Medium* and *Hard*. These levels vary in the number of apples to be eaten. At the Easy level there are only 10 apples. There are 20 and 30 apples respectively for the Medium and Hard levels

There are three settings for digestion time - which is the period that must elapse between eating an apple and moving off again. These are short and random, 5 seconds and 10 seconds.

The sound volume can be changed by either clicking or dragging the slider bar. You should be able to immediately hear the effect of any changes.

To play the game you first click on the 'Start' button by moving the pointer over the 'Start' box and 'Selecting' by pressing the left or *SELECT* button on
the mouse.

You are now ready to guide the worm to the nearest apple. This is done by:

1) If you are using the mouse, move the pointer over the arrows on the bottom left side of the display and 'Selecting' the direction of movement by pressing the left *SELECT* button on the mouse.

2) Using the keyboard the worm can be controlled with the cursor (or Arrow)
keys.

3) If using a Concept Keyboard (Overlay 3) press the arrowed area corresponding to the desired direction.

When you have made your move the worm will go to the new location if the move was legal (eg. not against a wall). If you have moved onto an apple, the apple will vanish before your eyes. Remember that while the worm is eating an apple he doesn't like being made to move off too quickly. To ensure that you know when *NOT* to move the worm, he changes his colour from a subtle brown to a striking black and white flash. Do *NOT* try to move him until he returns to his normal colour. When it is safe to do so, move to the next apple. Repeat these operations until all the apples are gone. You will then be given a summary of your results.

In addition to the apples displayed on the screen there are also 'worm holes' in each corner of the screen. These 'holes' provide underground passage across the screen and can be used to automatically move you from one corner to the diagonally opposite. The use of worm holes can greatly reduce the number of moves required to munch all the apples. So use them as and when appropriate !!!

Good Luck !!!!!!!!!
